I just acquired a 3W1 wallbox and I'm wondering about the instructions window glass. I was expecting a screen printed piece of glass that was translucent and backlit like the SC1s but this is what I found. Because the paper is opaque the light doesn't illuminate the instruction very well at all. After looking at replacements available on eBay and the parts list in the manual I'm guessing the original had the instructions screen printed in white on the glass but had some sort of colored backing behind that. Correct? Was the original backing translucent or just opaque paper?

Hi Steve, I HOPE, you did not get suckered into buying a "Johnny Rockets, restored" unit ! You are correct--originally they were silk-screened in white on the inside of the glass--glass was backed with red felt. The one you show here is a gen-u-whine Seeburg produced glass, used on the later versions of the 3W1. The last version (3W1D), showed 1 play for a dime, or two nickels. These glasses were all lit with a #55 lamp, shielded with a cardboard sleeve, placed thru a hole on the RH side. Ron Rich

No Johnny Rockets unit. Mine's original. The only thing I was suckered into was paying too much for it... :-)
Mine must be a 3W1D then because the instructions originally said two nickels for one selection but the "two nickels" has been marked out. The machine rejects nickels now and gives one selection for a dime and 4 for a quarter. (I've since modified it to only give 3 for a quarter)
If these had red felt backing they were never back-lit like the SC models?

ID tags says 3W-1. Guess someone changed the pricing later?
I see now why it's side lit. There's no room behind the glass for light to get in... Duh. :-)

Steve, Nope-- could have been someone installed the incorrect glass !! If not a D model, it would not have originally said "or two nickels"--- Ron Rich

Ron Rich Ron, I know this is an old thread, but I have to ask....what's the reason to not buy a Johnny Rockets 3W1 wallbox? I know some were modded to work with non-Seeburg "bubblers", but I looked at some that only seemed to have their 6v transformer removed, which I assume only means different light bulbs must be used. Any other reason to be concerned if it looks original except for the missing transformer?

VERY VERY interesting!! I can actually shed some more light on the "Johnny Rocket" 3W1 boxes. It turns out, not ALL of them got "mangled" as Ron said, although if the ones he was referring to are the ones typical of what you showed me in your very kind reply, then I have to agree, they mangled indeed! BUT...not all went the way of "mangle-ization" if that's even a word! I had an opportunity, (which is why I asked my question) yesterday to buy several Seeburg 3W1 boxes from a long closed Johnny Rockets. They had no conversion kit like the one shown in those ads, and no modified wall mount. They did have the standard "L" bracket table mount, nothing attached to it, just three screws to mount the back of the box to it so it holds the box off the table, and of course holes in the bottom to affix it to the table. Then inside, the only modification was the removal of the 6V transformer used ti power the standard light bulbs originally installed. There is a seller on eBay (very nice people) who sell a little package of replacement bulbs that work in the box that has had the transformer removed. I wound up talking to those folks, (again, truly nice people!) who explained they had at one time provided these wallboxes to many of the restaurants, and the only mod they were asked to do was remove the transformer and find a bulb substitute that didn't require the transformer, after there was an incident where a box started to smoke and it was discovered to be that transformer, so they had to be removed in an abundance of caution. I can provide pics if anyone is interested. So far I have tested two and they work fine! (Tested with my 100C) And again, no sign of mangling on the ones I got, although clearly some others got huge mods!
