Hello all - Any ideas of what this AMI Diplomat’s problem is? More specifically, its 1100 record changer? (Watch video clip of my machine in action below) vimeo.com/347622144It selects record fine, but then stops flat, without activation of the gripper arm. When I turn the cam wheel manually with allen wrench (see video) the gripper arm comes down and places record on turntable, but tone arm does not move. Continuing to turn cam wheel completes the gripper arm cycle, and it grabs record and places it back. Couple of times the record has stayed in the turntable and spun, but tone is locked and will not move to record. The service manual says the culprit may be the Relay “R” and wiring/adjustment/integrity of Cam switch C2. I have found Cam switch C2 buy it is tricky to get to - and I don’t was to start disassembly if I don’t have to. (Can’t get to it to check it) Not sure where to find relay “R” .... Note - I’m a noob to schematics (if it’s not obvious by now) but I’m getting better and willing to learn. Any advice would be appreciated - thanks in advance. Greg G

Ok - now its stuck in the spinning turntable cam position (record down and spinning but tone arm locked) and cam wheel will not turn manually. Attached motor seems stuck on (humming when placed out of service mode)
As you can hear on video, the cam wheel was pretty noisy when moving... perhaps a bearing has failed?
Again - any help is appreciated.

Hi Greg, Did you just get this phonograph ? Was it "moved" without the proper "bolting down for shipment" done ? If so, when you have a record spinning on the turn table (TT), lift up slightly on the rear of the tone arm and place the needle onto the record. Also,, there are two "oil wicks" on the transfer motor--fill them both with 20 wt. ND. oil -- Ron Rich

Yes - it was transported with preparation. I will look for oil wicks.
Tonearm is locked and will only move slightly. (Not far enough to get to record) Also amp seems not to be on. Seems like mechanism is locked (physically) “mid cycle”. Cam is stuck in same spot with or without AC. Cam will move a bit either clockwise or counter clockwise, (manually) but hangs up same spot regardless.

Greg, It appears that the phono was NOT, properly, prepared for transportation. It also appears that you did not understand my earlier post--With the power OFF, LIFT UP, on the rear, of the tone arm, until you can swing it over the turn table, then let the rear down (slip a record onto the TT first, so you do not damage the needle. It also sounds as if the gripper motor is jammed"--something's "buzzing " ? Ron Rich

Ok - I understand ... up and over with the turntable.
In regards to the buzzing - I believe my (oh so gentle) meddling so far has the unit (cam shaft specifically) hung up somewhere.
I will continue to gently advise explore as I peruse the service manual some more.

Greg, Yep- it is my guess you have hung it on the tone arm cam follower-- Ron Rich

OK- I’m neck deep now - removed the changer and have it on my work desk.
Got mechanism (grabber arm) back into position by manually (AC off) moving cam wheel, but it was a bit tough to turn. It sounds a bit loud - haven’t found a spot to lubricate it yet. (Is it supposed to sound as loud as in first video?)
Checked C2 switch (as directed in service manual troubleshooting) and it seems fine.
Going to check all microswitches and clean it up before installing back on the box for a test.

Greg, Did you follow the procedure for "moving" the cam as shown in the Service Manual ? Dono about loudness, as I can't hear it-- Did you get the tone arm synced first ? Ron Rich

Yes I did - did not solve base problem of gripper arm not activating when carousel stopped after selection.

I have yet to get a sound, as tone arm has yet to reach the record, but when I touched the needle slightly (as record was turning) heard no sound at all.
Seems like the sequence (after 45 selection lineups with gripper) has yet to trigger correctly- include mute switch/amp activation. (I think)
Just for the record - the only turntable/gripper action I have gotten was by “goosing” cam as in seen first video.

Greg, Did you "turn the cam" as per instructions in the Manual ?? If you properly turn the cam now, with the power OFF-- will the tone arm advance to the record ? Ron Rich

ok - more specifically... I did lift the tone arm up and over ... it may be synced now, but cam is pretty stiff .... wondering if that is normal?
I kind of don’t what to turn the cam a full revolution again until I can free it up a bit. (If indeed it needs it - and can be oiled.
Thanks again Ron for your help and advice.
