I was thinking that a cotter hairpin could be used by drilling a small hole in the shaft of the shock when it's fully extended (the door is open). Even a nail could work the same way. Would both shocks require it or would only one do the job? A quick and temporary fix would be to keep a small pair of vice grips in the unit and clamp it onto the piston to hold it open. I'm an auto mechanic and have been doing this for years to hold open car hoods with failed cylinders. I was doing this on my R-87 but eventually bought the correct struts. Also keep in mind that you will need a working latch on the unit, as the lift struts will open the unit from the fully closed position unless the latch is working.
