Starting to get stuck into my newly purchased 1454. All is working fine and sounding good, but I am getting the occasional missed selection. Other records will play and then the missed selections will eventually pick up and play. I have ordered a manual, so I am not going to tear into it at the moment, but it would be good to get some advice from any forum members who have had a similar problem and could steer me in the right direction. My initial thoughts would be a problem with dirty contacts somewhere in the keyboard. Then again, the buttons sound like the are making contact when depressed. And why will the missed selections only pick up once the other records have played. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Gary

Hi Gary, Not 100 % sure of what you are attempting to say-- You do realize that the phonograph "picks up" selections in the order as it "happens by" a "selected pin" --It does not pick up in the "order played". The fact that it plays them later leads me to believe there is no "keyboard" problem. If there is any "problem" with the phonograph(?), it would be in the contact block that "senses" a selected pin. Yep -- a Service Manual PACKAGE, is strongly recommended --at least by me--but only if, you will READ it ! --LOL Ron Rich

Hi Ron, sorry but I probably was not very clear in my description. I have been carrying out some tests and hear is what is happening. Nearly all selections are working fine except 23, 25 and 27. Switching machine on from start up, I press either of these three buttons first, I hear a click but nothing happens, then press 29 and machine hesitates slightly, press a bit harder on button 29 and machines takes off and plays fine, then it proceeds to play 23, 25 and 27. I am thinking there may be a problem with dirty or out of alignment contacts with these individual numbers on the selector panel. Any thoughts...Gary

Hi Gary, I can't recall which model RockOla changed the "play", or, "Scan control" circuit--If you use the scan switch to move the mech, if it goes to a home position , it has the 2nd "scan control" assembly. If so, the scan control ratchet, that holds the contacts closed, is dirty, or the contacts themselves are "pitted/dirty". See our FAQ's section on contacts-- If that's not the case, and the basket is prone to stop, after playing the last selected record, you have the earlier type unit that depends on a "washer" under EACH pin to make contact--and in this case, "dirt" is the enemy ! Hi Ron and other members of the forum, just a quick update on my Rockola 1454. I invested in a can of deoxit D5 and and worked it into the selector pins/levers. What an excellent product. I wasn't sure if it would be available in the UK but found it on ebay. It would seem that with lack of use some selections were not working. I also managed to get the light strip glass panel out at the front of the machine and refurbished the colours. To access the glass panel, I had to remove the three sided selector drum, so used "deoxit" on the button bank while it was out. There was very little of the original colours left, so this has made a huge difference and looks really great when switched on, particularly at night. Who knows how long this machine had been sitting before I purchased it. All seems to be working fine now but will be monitoring the situation. Ron I think you were correct "dirt is the enemy". We will see what happens but long term I may need to think about a complete selector strip down and clean. Hopefully not. This is shaping up to be a really nice, relatively original and unmolested machine. It has the original amp, the Jensen speakers and new correct replacement cartridge fitted. Good sound. I had one of these machines way back in the 70s and regretted selling it. Its only taken me this long to get another one. Keep on Jukin. Regards Gary

Hi Gary, Glad it's working ! I am not a fan of Deoxit 5 , for anything like a keyboard, or a pinbank as it is somewhat conductive and could (ever seen it happen here)"flash-over problems-- I know that Seeburg's hi voltage keyboard are very prone to having flash-overs when keyboards are "sprayed"-- Ron Rich
