Does anyone know how to program these for free play. What limited information I can find online says to set P10 to 255 which did nothing.

Yes that is exactly how you do it, enter value 255 in location P10.

So if you then go back and examine the contents of location P10, what value is there?

Thanks. That's the best documentation I've seen yet. I didn't realize 254 was another free play option but it didn't make any difference either. I did check and see if I could program any number into the free play and nothing appears to work. I tried a couple low numbers (5, 10, 20) none stored and the system only showed whatever credits it already had. Interestingly enough, when I go back to P10 it does show whatever I programmed however that number doesn't transfer to the available credits. Anyone else want to chime in, I'm open to suggestions.

When you set location P10 this sets the free plays available via the remote control.
You'll need to hit the 'Free Credit' button on the remote to utilize them. You may also have a key switch on the back of the cabinet to enable Free Credits via the remote. If this switch is off, the remote will not release free credits.
The computer will automatically clear paid credits after the machine is on without activity for approximately one hour. This is normal behavior and cannot be changed.

Maybe that's my problem. There is no remote control. The back of the unit only has three buttons and no key switch. Volume up, volume down and cancel. Is the remote you're talking about a wireless device or something hard wired that I may be able to emulate? The only free credit switch I know about is a normally closed switch on the coin opto board.

I once created a push button to emulate the remote's 'free credit' button. It utilized a momentary switch and a couple of switching diodes. This was for an ES-IV system; I'm not sure how to go about this for an ES-III.

Does that help?

I made a free credit button with a momentary switch and three 1n914 diodes as per the schematic (anode to S603 pins 3,4,5). I set P10 to 255 and hit the yellow "Top 10" button to store it. I hit the R button twice to return to normal operation (with the door open). When I hit the newly created free credit button the "Selection courtesy of the management" and the "Your Selection" lamps momentarily light up but no credits are added.
I have also spoken with Mark at NSM Jukebox repairs and he suggested the free play button should be one of the two unused wires in the 4 pin ribbon that goes to the cabinet switch. According to him, grounding that wire should trigger free play. Upon inspection there are two wires going to the cabinet switch, one wire to ground and one unused wire which when grounded also does nothing.

Installing that link is how an ESII NSM is set on free play (but you could give it a try!). I have repaired a couple of NSM Satellites in the past which is why I had the schematic but I have no recollection of doing anything with the free play! I would also have thought that in normal operation, just making the free credit button should at least add credit?

Nope. Like I said when I hit the free play button both the "Selection courtesy of the management" and the "Your Selection" buttons momentarily light but no credits are added.
Someone on another forum suggested it may be locked out in the programming somewhere but I have no idea what parameter that would be.
