Hello. I just moved my entertainer jukebox to a family member 3 hours away last weekend. I rebuilt the SHP3 amp 6 mos ago as well as the DCC.
I prepped it for shipping. Got there fine. Played it all day Saturday some on Sunday and worked great. They wanted to listen more tonight, they flipped the power switch. Heard a loud squealing, then a loud "POP" then a plume of smoke then everything turned off (blew fuse I suspect)
Any ideas on where to start investigating? I am hoping it was and electrolytic that blew because they can cause a loud squeal like they described. Hoping it is NOT the transformer, but I know it can cause a squeal and pop if it went bad too. I asked them to try and find what blew and where it was so I could start prepping the repair. I will plan a time to drive there in the next several weeks but want to game plan before I go.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rudy,
It could be hard to say where the failure is. If everything went 'dead', it suggests that the main fuse may have blown. The electronic units and the lighting circuits could all be suspect. If the amp develops a short, it usually doesn't take out the main fuse (same for the control unit). Could the squeal have come through the speakers? That would be a major clue, and point to the amplifier. Another clue would be where the smoke came from. Transformers usually don't go out instantly, they usually go out after they've been stressed for a certain time period. Plus they usually fail rather quietly, sometimes producing a bubbling or crackling noise. If an electrolytic went bad, it could have vented producing smoke (and that squeal). That would be evident by visual inspection. I have a feeling the failure will be fairly easy to track down. -Marty

Thanks Marty. That would have been a good question to ask them, if that loud squeal came thru the speaker or not. I will ask them tomorrow. I asked them to look for malformed capacitors and black burn marks. To use their nose to help find it because you know those blown capacitors really stink. Thanks again. I really appreciate it. Rudy
