This may sound a little crazy, but try running a ground wire from the mechanism chassis to the amplifier chassis to see if this affects the hum.
Some ground problems are elusive.

Thanks Marty
I have tried that without success. I removed the 'half-way' plug and my meter is detecting a very small short in the tone-arm wire leading to the cartridge. This may be the problem. I can't find a local seller (in Australia) so will need to order from Stamann etc. It'll take a few weeks to arrive, hopefully this will fix the problem.
I can only buy stereo cable, I suppose this will be okay. I'll let you know.
Cheers Gordon...

Hi Marty,
Thanks for sticking with me on this.
I think I fixed it!!
I bought some shielded audio wire from the local electronics store. It was a little thicker, but I was able to massage it into place.
I rewired the tone-arm, new connections to the cartridge and re-soldered to the amp, particularly the mid-way plug.
Hopefully it will continue without the hum, more testing required.
Thanks Gordon....

G'day Marty and Norman,
I'm calling it fixed!
I gave it a good work-out and the hum did not return.
It was a reasonably straightforward fix, I just did not know where to start, the knowledge that people share on these forums is fantastic...Thanks again
Gordon..
