Sorry Norman, just one last question for you. The display that shows the Top 3 most popular selections doesn't ever change. There is also a digital counter underneath the Top 3 display that stays the same. The manual explains how to reset the popularity meter, but I wondered if you knew whether having no coin mech fitted to the juke would affect the popularity meter? Logic tells me it shouldn't make any difference, because it's permanently on 99 credits, but I don't want that display to end up with dashes rather than numbers if I reset it, as I like it as a visual. But it would also be great for it to work properly. Do you have any knowledge of that side of the Rock-Ola 480? Many thanks John

Because your jukebox scans A sides and B sides alternately, it's quite normal for the magazine to make a complete revolution before selecting. That's a function of what was scanned prior to it parking and of course it scans a revolution when it's switched on. The final suggestion that I can offer with regard to the missing position 165 is to carry out the set-up for the opto coupler as detailed in the manual. It might be that the opto coupler is so close to its limit of adjustment that it's just simply missing one out of eighty slots because of manufacturing tolerances in the encoder disc?
I don't know much about your top three selections. Most of that type of machine that I have worked on have been Max 1 or Max 2 and I don't think they have that feature. Also they have all been home use and nobody really bothers with the hit tracker functions and the jukeboxes work OK despite the state of the hit tracker. I think the schem-a-grams should take you through the operation of the hit tracker should you want to fault find there. There must also be a battery back-up for the hit tracker as well otherwise it would lose data.
Norman.

Hi John,
My knowledge is on the low side however I did want to chime in and say I have a 488 on free-play and the hit tracker / top 3 songs do function and change on mine. I just tried the clear button and indeed I now have dashed lines for all 3 (confirming that's what you will see as well if you press it and it works).
I also notice every now and then a 'random' selection will play. I've never encountered a case though where I cannot select a particular song.

Hi Norman,
Thanks for the final suggestion, I might give it a try, but I am a little worried that I may make the issue worse, due to my limited knowledge, so it might be best to wait until I have the juke serviced and ask a professional to try that one?
Thanks again for all your valuable advice, it is appreciated.
Very best regards John

Hi Brett,
Many thanks for your reply. After you pressed the reset button and got the dashes in the display did it return to displaying track numbers, or do you need to play some records on it to see if it starts to record the Top 3 again?
It sounds daft, because, as Norman rightly says, the Top 3 most played records aren't particularly relevant for a jukebox in home-use, but I kind of like the feature, and also the aesthetic of the display showing the numbers, it goes with all the other lights that the 480 has that add to it's visual appeal to me. So, what I don't want to risk is re-setting the display and ending up with a line of dashes instead of numbers.
I also have an NSM Galaxy 200 and that shows the top 10 most played records and it can be interesting to see what record I play the most, so it would be nice to enjoy it on the Rock-Ola too 😊
Best regards John
p.s. The 488 is a stunning machine, if I had more room (and willing to risk my relationship!) I would have one of those too 😊

I had a quick look at the schematic for the hit tracker and there is indeed battery back-up for the memory in there. It would be well worth checking that out because if the battery is still there, it could be leaking. And Brett, also worth checking the state of your one and isn't there an attract mode dip switch setting that will play a random selection?
Norman.

Hi Norman,
My battery is still there, looks like it is hard wired into the board, so not sure if it still works?
But it's not leaking which is good news!

My battery certainly looks original (and also wired in with no signs of leakage). As soon as I make a selection, it's added to slot 1 on the top 3 indicator. I looked all over the place and could not find anything that seemed to be a random selection option...
I do love my 488 but have always wanted a visible mech. I finally came across a 404 and so sadly I will be parting ways with the 488. My wife made that condition clear before I pounced on the new one haha.
