I'm nose deep in it right now (it's on my lap while I read this). Was expecting more of a dry read, if I'm honest, while it's actually an entertaining read-- thanks!
The phono was moved by the original owner to a thrift store who didn't really know what they had (that, I suspect, includes both the previous owner and the thrift store owner) so we can assume it was not safely moved.
Will check this out, thanks!

Damn, I've worked it out (thanks to your book). The frog is fine-- alive and "kicking". I spotted the safety plunger was stuck closed so I've freed that up, but still the same cycling.
Then I turned the phono off and manually reset all the pins on the pin bank. Sure enough, the mech reset and stopped. If I hit the scan switch on the left post, the mech comes to life and tries to play a record - but no scanning. My guess is that the clutch is completely gummed up - like the rest of the mech was. I'm not sure if I can oil it in place and free it up or whether I'll have to remove the mech and clean the clutch. I was hoping to get the phono working before I dismantled it to clean it so I knew it was functioning but that's beginning to look unlikely since the "dirt" seems to be hte main problem here.
The whole mech needs cleaning but I live in an apartment and I'm trying to work out how to do that. Might have to be in the dog washing station and a short stint outside in the parking lot to dry.
