seeburg b, just put a redhead in I got off ebay. when song is canceled manually from backside button, or when record trips off, the speaker "thumps" a bit. normal?! in my opinion it isn't a horrid BANG but a thump, you hear and notice it. may be nothing and i'm being to picky but, when I notice something that it didn't do before, it raises an eye brow.

Has nothing to do with the cartridge--check the cap on the plug for the reject button on the WSR--if not a .02, change it ! Check the mute switch on the mech--is it "clean"--adjusted correctly ? Which cart didja "replace" ? Ron Rich

ron,
took the rear cover off and on the inside I see this capacitor you're talking about. doesn't say anything on it other than some numbers (80098 or 86996 depending how you read it)

ron,
see my older posts, I posted a pic of the cartridge but seems we can't post pics on this site anymore. you told me it was likely a Pickering "340" style STEREO cartridge. the cartridge itself says seeburg stero on it and that's all. aluminum head with yellow needles in it.

I can put my old cartridge in (340 stero) and it does NOT thump at song end/cancelation. install redhead and it thumps

Kevin, Very interesting--Yes--you can post here-- I don't see your old post-- If that cart says "Seeburg Stereo" on it and it came from Canada--that guy has a flock of those stickers--Does it have two or four pins-- does it have any other numbers on it? That cap has more on it then that--spin it-- replace it-- Ron Rich

Kevin, this was/is common on those old machines. The mute doesn't occur till the clutch moves. Seeburg dealt with this on later models with transistor amps by routing the trip through a relay with mute contacts formed to close just ahead of the contacts that trip the mech. You can build such an arrangement into your machine, I did this on a Wurlitzer 1800 which had very noticeable brief vibration when the changer motor started, but in the end it wasn't worth the effort to do on all the others I had back then.
One reason it may be more noticeable with the redhead is it's much higher output vs the one you were using. Since you probably have the volume control set to a lower position where there is more bass boost any sort of thump will seem louder. I've also noticed that older, less compliant pickups w/stiffer styli cantilevers will more readily couple vibrations from the mech to the stylus.
It's another cruder side of jukebox operation that went largely unnoticed in the noise of a location.

rob,
interesting, and helpful. thanks! you're right too about the lower volume level; I have it at maybe about 1/2. i'll check the capacitor ron was mentioning just to do so, but if this is "standard operation"-i'll leave it be and not go messing with things that work just fine!

also, ron mentioned checking the mute switch on the mechanism and it's adjustment. what and where is this, I've searched the "adjustments" in my service manual and nothing popped up about a mute switch.

Rob, Kevin, The MA (mute switch A) is on the reset lever. which moves prior to the clutch. Kevin, all switches with a "M" in them on your phono, have a relationship with the mute function. Ron Rich
