I have a 404s Capri (1963) that I purchased which was converted to free-play and the coin mech was removed. Does anyone have ideas as to what mod(s) were likely done to get the box to free-play without a coin mec? Service Manual says nothing about modifying the box to free-play (yeah, go figure).
Thanks in advance!

The easiest way to have put your 404 on free play would have been to either lock back or remove the reset pawl (item 14) on the write-in unit - see the parts list, page 68. Norman.

Hi Norman, I dis-agree with that advice ! I have an "EZ-ier" way-- Remove one screw holding the relay, loosen the 2nd one, spin relay so armature does not contact wheel. tighten remaining screw- Done, with an EZ way to return it to coin use ( and you won't loose that part either !) in 3 seconds !! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Michael, "--go figure---", Nope--Go READ the FAQ's sticky-"Hi Newbies"-- Ron Rich

Either way, it's going to be in that area! I've always seen it done the way I've described but agree the other way saves the pawl getting lost! Norman.

HAHAHA! You two are pretty cool to watch! Anyway, as I'm still a greenhorn and the schematic is not real clear on positioning I'm posting a picture of what he has done so you two can decide who was correct(er). Drumroll please.... Attachments:

It looks to me as though he just bent the pawl up?

I agree! Do you suppose its ruined or should I attempt to 'bend it back' and do as you suggested with the screws? Or, perhaps you see something there that I don't?

Mike, If you wish to operate it "on coins", you will need to un-bend it, as carefully as possible, as I doubt you can find that part today ! Ron Rich

OK so I was wrong - that was the "easiest" way!! I think that should fix OK if you're careful. In any case, Stamann (jukebox-world.de) does a repro of the pawl! Although you would really only need to fix it if you wanted to go back to coin operation. Norman.

I think I can bend it back without breaking it. Id like to keep the box original which, for me includes being able to quickly convert it back to coin operation. However, the coin mech is missing. I think I found the part number in the Parts Manual but a quick search turned up nothing. I also collect old vending machines and often the coin mechs are interchangeable among models. Might that be the case with JBs?
Thanks for your help and guidance!

Bending it backMAY work--just be sure the end that enters the gear does so in a manor that wont cause "wear" on the gear ! The coin unit, is a standard NDQ either CoinCo (CA), or National (NRI) brand unit. Same as used in vending. If there is room, an optional "Half Dollar unit" MAY have been attached to the top- RockOla part numbers are useless in this case, today. Ron Rich
