Trying to remove the record rack so I can clean the mech on the STD4 project. I got 2 of the 4 bolts out, but the other 2 wont budge. To make matters worse, looks like a previous owner abused the heads of these just enough every Phillips head bit I have (even brand new ones) cam out. I've wd-40's it numerous times. I heated with a soldering iron then chilled. They wont make that first move to crack open. At wits end.
Hopefully some of the old-timers here have seen this innumerable times and has their own favorite method to pass on.
Thanks Andy

For these particular bolts, I would consider a hand impact driver.

Hi Andy, I would suggest that you NOT remove them--Do you have a copy of my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide" ? If so, read it, as I probably have removed about one in a million of those racks. If you do--WD 40 is not what I would use--It is a water displacement, not a good penetrating oil, IMHO. I agree with Marty's above suggestion--if that won't work--Di-no-mite, or a hack-saw will be needed. Ron Rich

Ron, I DO have you mech guide and I do remember you saying you dont remove the record racks. This one particularly dirty plus with the extra width that I didnt have with the B mech, with the rack on, it wont fit in my cleaning tub. It has to go Is a hand impact driver like the old Yankee Screwdrivers?? Thanks Andy

Hi Andy, I thought you had a copy--re-read it--as it don't do you no good iffin you don't read it ?? lol -- I clean them on the tailgate of my Pick-um-up, 1982 Chebby truck ! BTW--that Phillips screw ain't a "machine screw", it's a self threading screw. That impact driver is similar to a Yankee drill--but relies on pressure from a hammer hitting it on it's "head". A Yankee Screwdriver is like a Push Drill with a screwdriver bit. A Hand Impact Diver is struck with a hammer.

Unlike Ron, I don't have a distaste for removing the record racks. I've remove hundreds of them (if not thousands), but certainly not millions!
I personally find it easier to get the rack out of the way! Not rocket science to re-install them.

Hi Marty, On the "pinbank" type 100 selection, and the V-VL models, I agree with you. But on the later thinner racks, that have the mechanisms that run at a faster speed, it is often nearly impossible to align the rack, perfectly, with the record lift arm, on both ends. Even Seeburg production, with an alignment jig, had problems with that--note the lift arm variations--- Ron Rich

Thanks for your input Ron, but somehow in over 25 years I've never had a problem aligning them. Just lucky I guess.

Ron, believe it or not I’ve read your manual NUMEROUS times. Over and over. I like to be learned about something before I tackle something new. Unfortunately, I live in a part of the country where I still have snow on the ground and won’t be doing any outside work for a few more weeks. It’s gotta be done inside, which means it has to fit in my washtub. Both of your manuals have been an indispensable resource for me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

Furthermore.... One could scribe a line or two in the rack/base to put it back exactly as it was previously assembled.

jukeboxmarty.... I scribed NUMEROUS lines both on the rack and the Tormat and the base and the brackets so I can assemble damn near where it was. To be honest, not sure if this worked when I bought it, so might not have been aligned anyways

Looks like you've got a handle on this. Hopefully you'll get those machine screws out. (Oops... self threading screws)

Guy's I've seen them slightly "miss-aligned", right off the production line, did not pass the SRT, prior to being inserted into the cabinet ! Scribing lines will gettem "darn near"-- but sometimes it won't get the brass ring--or, cigar ! lol Ron Rich

Ha ha! Seeburg just should have hired me years ago.... Then they wouldn't have had any alignment problems! They'd probably still be in business!
