looking at a 161 to buy; guy says its been sitting a while but it works and plays. was restored a while back. good clean looking box. sometimes it plays fine, but often it picks up selections that are incorrect from what he inputs. it's 5 hours away so I haven't actually seen this myself. this sound like a typical problem, or could it be a whole rhelm of things that would cause this?
thanks kevin

Kevin That is a "person's lack of diagnosis ability problem", rather then a machine problem. Ron Rich

Kevin, I personally would regard this as a minor problem -useful in negotiating price. The problem you describe can be as simple as corrosion on the grounding plate under the tormat. It is a minor problem.
Unless you luck into a truly restored machine (restored being a subjective opinion) it will certainly need a fair amount of work.
One positive is the fact that it is functioning means the transformers are likely OK.

great guys; thanks for all the help. I remember cleaning that grounding plate on my dads 201 when that was coming back to life (although I forgot what I did exactly), it wasn't difficult at all; easy to get to too!
