Hi Guys, just got a r85. when I turn it on amp goes on ( I can hear it). 8vdc led on CCC board lights up. all leds on power supply light up. checked voltages to mech control all good. carousel does not spin at all. if I push sprag motor selonoid lock and release it I can spin it and led for the elec eye blinks. found a lot of cold solder joints and repaired them on the computer control board. removed leaky nicad battery. not much acid damage to board. Mech control board looks great at all solder points so I left it alone. all transistors on mech board checks good. nothing burned. do I need to replace NiCad?? I can manually grab a record and put it down. there was a few records jammed in carosel and I removed them. maybe because it was stuck messed up a board. service switch does not turn carosel. what next???

Hi Albert, Since I don't know Rowe phono numbers too well, I am thinking this is the model with the "pricing board", which takes the plug in cards. If so, these are famous for the Rowe problems listed above in the sticky on common problems-- Also, FYI --Lit LED's do not tell you that the voltage is correct--only that there is, voltage--And, yes, if no battery is installed, these will do "odd things"-- Ron Rich

Hi Albert welcome to the group.
The Rowe Ami R-85 (1981) was the second jukebox model of this range of technology R-84 to R-88.
The battery needs to be a 2.4 volt rechargeable battery.
You need to inspect the power supply (junction box) PCB for dry joints (cold joints USA) on the long connector from the transformer.
Next move on to the boards and looms to rule out any connection issues, the Pricing Board you should regard as a just a connection block and check the header pins again for dry joints, all lines of data go through this board and can be the reason for several faults.
After checking everything out you should be able to put the service switch into SERVICE, pressing the cancel button makes the carousel revolve.
Please let us know how you get on.

I haven't opened the power supply because I checked voltages at the molex plug going to the carosel and voltages are correct, 8.5dc, 28dc, and 28ac. when I put it in service and push reset, the reset led lights up but nothing happens and no other leds go on. if transfer motor or carriage led goes on I would assume motor burned out. im waiting on battery because maybe system wont work without a working one.

Hi Albert,
I would check out the service switch and make sure that all of the power lines are present through the switch.

Hi Albert, In some cases, "meters" especially in-expensive ones will read the voltage as being OK, when it's not ! This is especially true of "digital-self ranging" types. I always advise voltages (low voltage, in particular), be checked with a known good Analog, meter, while the voltage has a "load". Alan is correct--that model "service switch" ( "clean" it with a safety solvent--dry it-- followed by Deoxit 5,--follow the directions on the can !!), is always suspect, as are the header connectors. voltages are good. when first turned on im looking for carosel to align itself by spinning. its not. my r83 will spin to either of two locations then stop. I just have to wait for battery replacement to come in and continue testing after I install it
