Hello all, new to the forum and happy to be here. I recently bought a R-84 and, for the most part, it works really well. One issue I am having is with the selection buttons. Currently numbers 7 and 8 do not work. When I press these buttons nothing happens. I am thinking of pulling the board behind it and cleaning the contacts but thought I would put this out there in case anyone else has had a similar issue? Thanks in advance!
Adam

Hi Adam, I would dis-assemble the keyboard and look for poorly soldered points on those two buttons--did you read the "common problems" sticky", posted above here ? Ron Rich

Hello Adam,
Welcome to the group.
I would check the Pricing Board for any dry joints(cold joints USA)on the top and bottom connections. If these are all good with no signs of cracking around the soldered pins then as Ron says check that there is no dry joints on the back of the keyboard. Do not be tempted to using any form of switch cleaner, this would only make the problem worse.
Try testing the 7 & 8 switches with a meter for continuity whilst operating the switches. If you carefully desolder the switches you can remove them, they can be taken apart and in some cases cleaned with a fiber glass pencil on the contacts or you could purchase some new switches.

BTW, let's say I did spray some switch cleaner on it (so used to using it on receivers I didn't think it would be an issue) what is the best way to clean it off? Or just avoid using it again? Thanks!

Hi Adam, "Best way" to clean it off is a "PLASTIC SAFE" Safety Solvent (91%,or higher, rubbing al-key-haul, will also work). Ron Rich

Hi Adam,
When I used to work on site in pubs/bars I used to ask the the barman for a shot of gin, which I found to be a good cleaner for electrical & mechanical cleaner alike.

Hi Ron, Sadly there is always one prat/cheap skate. Regards Alan Ron and Alan, thank you both for the very helpful advice. I took off the pricing board and resoldered all of the cold/dry joints and it now is working perfectly. I do have another question. There is a wire with a connector to the left of the tonearm that is sitting loosely in a slot. Here is a link to a pic, it is circled: photos.app.goo.gl/5eiZKXtFyX4uZPbG9If this wire shifts, sound will not come out of the speakers, or it is barely audible. If left alone it seems fine, just wondering if it should be secured somehow? Thanks again for everything! adam

Hi Adam, That connector, is THE connector, that feeds the audio from the tone arm to the amp-- READ the "sticky" above, above about "Common Rowe connector problems" Ron Rich

Got it, Ron- thanks. Should it just be "hanging" in the small bracket or should it be mounted somehow?
Now that the other issues have been straightened out, it seems I'm having a couple more. Occasionally the sound is barely audible, and moving this connector will bring it back. Also, unrelated, sometimes power will wind down but (again) moving the plug for the amp that is plugged into the unswitched outlet will bring it back. I'm guessing I will need to replace these cables or clean the connectors.

Adam, Didja read the above "sticky', on common problems ?? PLEASE do so--that's what the "stickies" are for-- I would secure that wire to something "solid" to relieve the strain on the connector. Ron Rich
