Hi guys my name is Bill and I hope I can find someone to help me on here I sent a msg to Ron Rich a few days ago but maybe he is away for the weekend or something as I havent heard from him anyway guys or girls I have this rock-ola 448 that has been working great all these years thanks to tips from the boys from Phonoland ,well the problem I am having now is when the record starts to play it suddenly skips on the same spot and repeats over and over again, this happens with every record that is playing for about 30 seconds then sticks on the same spot, I have checked for any hangups none found I have checked the tone arm force its good adjusted the tone arm spring and even replaced the stylus needle TWICE but still nothing is solving my problem I used to get tips from a member on phonoland he was from Ireland but lost touch so I hope I get lucky and get help from you guys and girls Thanks Bill PS anther thing I just notice is the PC selection board hass the wires soldered on to one side which has 22 spots but only 18 with wire on it but the other side has a plug on connection with 22 wires on it it was that way when I bought it 30 years ago just wondering if that is right or wrong?

Hi Bill, The only thing that CAN be is something hitting ( stopping) the tone arm's progress. A lack of proper oil, or the tone arm wire "hanging" on something ? ( I did not get that email-sure you sent it to ronnn rich ?)Ron Rich

Hi Ron I dont know what happened to the msg I sent you but I did send you one anyway thanks for getting back to me Ron I just cant figure this problem with the record sticking in the same spot,,I went back and looked again after reading your reply to me I oiled the shaft of the tone arm which seems to move quite freely?? anyway Ron I played another record and when that skipped i put my thumb ever so slightly at the back of the tone arm but not on the arm and the record would play without skipping I am thinking maybe I should remove the tone arm and really clean and lube it, eeverything else seems to work perfect except the skipping maybe I am missing something Ron and someone will see this and give me other directions,I know you are mostly a seeburg man but you have advised me before on phonoland and you have never been wrong, just grateful you are on this site and everyone here needs a man like you Again Ron Thanks a million Bill

Bill, I've dealt with this problem several times in commercial operation. The first thing to do is flush out the bearing that the arm pivots on. Old oil and tiny particles will cause binding and sometimes just stop the arm dead at random spots. An inherent problem in that arm is the stupid spring for setting the tracking weight. It throws the fulcrum way of center and exacerbates friction in the(very basic)pivot bearing. I always converted these arms to counterweight balance which allows -much- lower tracking force with resultant lower wear. Recently, somebody went capitalist and offers a kit: www.nicemite.com/Jukebox/Jukebox.htm But I only used dedicated and nice looking weights for visible mech machines. For the others I just used a series of large washers fixed between bolts. If you want further instructions on this, let us know. RobNYC

Hi Rob Thanks for the info I will certainly try that I just got to figure how the tone arm comes off That was going to be my next step,Rob I have all the manuals and the troubleshooting along with the wire diagram But I do admit even they can be confuseing.I purchased the machine years ago and have enjoyed it I do have a question about the wire on the selection pc board but will ask you about that when I Finnish with the tone arm THANKS Rob BILL Rob Thanks for your help with my Rock-Ola 448, I did what you advised and cleaned everything with the tone arm and all the related parts, oiled and lube it I put everything together again and played a few records,Sorry to say Rob the record still stuck in the same spot I was so disappointed But didnt give up first I ghanged the stylus again and adjusted the tone arm spring nothing worked Then Rob I noticed theree was a lot of lift on the tone arm shaft so I disconnected the tone arm Spring altogether and manually lifted the tone arm shaft and slipped a 1/8 inch flat washer under the arm plate and what do you Know every record played without skipping I was so excited I couldnt wait to post it,everything is working the way it should now except for some selections not selecting so thats my next project again Rob Thanks Bill
