Good Day,
I saw a recommendation from Alan on needle replacement. He mentioned every 6 months for machines in service and once a year for machines in one's home. Just seems a little subjective. Can anyone provide a suggestion based on the number of plays? 3,000, 5,000, or other number of plays? Thanks in advance.

Hi Fernando, I usually agree with what Alan Hood suggests, but, if he suggested this, surly not here !. Diamond needles seldom "wear out". They can last hundreds of thousands of plays, and in fact, in home use, they can last a "lifetime". They should (IMHO) be inspected about every six months for chips or excessive wear, but unless being "dropped on", or scraped across records, they should be fine, IF, they were (in this case Shure brand) quality in the first place, and are properly adjusted for weight. Hello Ron, thanks for the response. Based on what you have stated, if a quality needle and the tone arm is properly set up the needle should last quite some time. I know that the needle was replaced January of this year and that it has approximately 4,000 plays and still sounds great, clear highs and lows. I did just pickup a couple of needles which of course I will just tuck away in a safe place for the time being.
Once again, thank you.

Fernando, The quality of the aftermarket needles varies somewhat, by both "brand" and production run. Usually the needles themselves are OK, but the alignment, and positioning of the supporting shank is not very well controlled. One almost always can either see this, or hear it on the first record played. Ron Rich

Hello Fernando & Ron,
My suggestion was based on what we used to do in busy bars back in the day, jukeboxes were knocked about and the environment shall we say was not always the best, dirt and beer do not do the jukeboxes any favors.
Home jukeboxes stylus's should last longer especially if the pressure on the stylus is not much more than 3 grams.

Hi Alan, "Operators" here were "cheap" ! They tended to run needles till they were flat, or record shavings were visible on the mechanism ! Then they went and purchased the least expensive, aftermarket needles, they could find and complained about how often they had to change them ! LOL Ron Rich
