I recently purchased an ami r81 that has been sitting for 30 years along with a stash of nearly 320 45 records. Every record has mildew, disintegrated paper gunk and dirt. I am planning to hand wash every one and build an ultrasonic cleaner to go the rest of the way. However some records have a wierd white deposit 1/16 to 1/8 inch across that is raised and would snag the stylus. I have no idea what this is or how to nondestructively get it off. Seems very hard and very stuck. Hot water and dish soap wont touch it. Anyone have any ideas as to what this is or how to clean this off?

You got me good on that one. In all seriousness though it seems the online consensus is that records contaminated with the "etching" variety of fungus are "ruined". However in a previous career as a boat mechanic we got all kinds of "etched" critters off fiberglass with some variety of muriatic acid gel such as easy on/easy off by starbrite. May give that a try at some point since there are no better ideas around. Got some old CCR and MJ records in the "ruined" pile I'd like to hear. Not a collector so I wont ever get the chance to hear the original vinyl recording unless I fix what Ive got.
