I was just given a Rock-Ola 460 which works as it should with the exception of the dome light. I figured the fluorescent tube was burned out so I purchased a new one but it still doesn't work. I've looked through the manuals that came with it and those haven't helped me diagnose the problem. Is this a common problem, is there a ballast that I can check? I couldn't find any previous topics on this subject in the Rockola section, so any info on this would be appreciated. Thank you 😊

Hi Robert, You guessed it-- there is a ballast somewhere in the cabinet. The Service Manuals usually show "cabinet wiring" and the parts manuals usually show parts locations-- see our FAQ's for a list of manual sellers, if needed. -- did you replace the starter--with the correct one ??

Hi Ron,
Thank you for the reply. It did come with a parts and service manual, as well as a huge fold out wiring diagram. I only replaced the fluorescent tube. Is this considered the starter? If so I didn't realize they had different lights other than length, warm, or cool.

The "starter" is a round can object--used to be metal, but now can be plastic- usually located near one end, or the other of the lamp. It's in a "twist" socket--spin it and it will fall out in your hand. ( If you posted a photo, I can't view it)Ron Rich

Ron,
I did see that round metal can at one end. Reminds me of an old automobile flasher. Should I start with it and is there a way to test it? If it is bad do you know where I can purchase a replacement?

No way to test it unless there is another lamp of exactly the same type in the phono--then swap starters-- ACE stores carry starters-- Ron Rich

Make sure your new bulb is good also,by installing it in another location. I have gotten my share of new bad bulbs. Could save you alot of time.

I must have changed at least, 10,000 of these-- Only "bad ones" I can recall blew out as soon as power was applied-- this is caused by a bad ballast. Lamp can be checked with an ohm meter --as long as there is a reading across the contacts on both ends, lamp should at least light the filaments--If they light, and the lamp does not, quickly remove the starter--if it then lights, the starter is most likely bad, or not the correct one ! Ron,
You hit the nail on the head. I purchased a 2 pack of starters (FS-4) for around $7.00 at Lowes, put one in and we have light. Thanks for your expertise.
