Hello,
I'm new to this forum so I thought I would test the great minds and experience that abound within.
I have a Rockola 484 that has been standing in my unheated garage for the last two years. It was previously working fine for years and was in a heated summerhouse. I started the machine up the other day but had a couple of issues:
1. The turntable is very slow - about half the speed it should be. I put two drops of Liberty Oil in the spindle that turns the wheel under the record turntable as recommended on the lubrication chart, but this has not solved the problem. How can I get the turntable to revolve at a consistent 45rpm?
2. The Popularity Meter (Hit tracker) is not lighting up the three blue 'Location Top 3 Hits Microcomputed'. I know from owning pinballs that sometimes corrosion can affect the connectors so I have taken them out and put them back in a couple of times but it is still not working. The 9.6v led is lit on the meter but i notice there is a battery soldered to the circuit board. I don't want to start taking boards etc apart just yet but should the meter still work even if the battery is probably dead? What is the type/voltage of the battery - all I can see is 'Enercell Made in USA. The machine is now set to freeplay - would this have any effect?
I have the 476/481/484 service manual but it does not show a schematic for the Popularity Meter nor how to adjust the turntable or make it work at the correct speed.
Sorry for so many questions all in one go but I hope somebody will be able to help me solve the problem. I want to do a service and oil the rest of the machine and grease the necessary areas but that is scheduled for a later date.
Many thanks in advance.
Simon

Hi Simon, "Liberty oil", IN MY OPINION, is "best" to oil the toilet seat, when it squeaks ! See our FAQ's section. You will most likely need to dis-assemble, clean, and PROPERLY oil, that motor and capspin, in order to get it going the correct speed. Cleaning the rubber drive wheel, and the turntable inside may also help. Did you see the "lube chart" above this post in the "stickies" ? As for the "Hit Tracker" I have been lead to believe that it is a PIA to keep going, and the phono works "better" with the HT un-pluged ! Ron Rich

Hi Simon, It's my experience that in the domestic situation, people ignore the hit tracker so I never bother with them! The original Rock-Ola manual came with a large fold out schematic and that contains the diagram of the hit tracker. You can purchase copies of this large schematic separately at jukebox-world.de although I think it is now closed until August.
I have known a few instances where the profit setter display controller chip has failed and I usually suggest replacing it with one from the hit tracker. There are two display controller chips in the hit tracker, one for its internal display and one for external so it may be that your external display controller chip has failed. Jukebox Revival in the Netherlands had stock of the display controller chip but because it's an obsolete part, not particularly cheap as I remember - and I haven't checked whether it is still available.

Hello,
Thanks for the responses so far. I was recommended Liberty Oil from a jukebox guy in the U.S. for my Rockola 1458 which I had in my house there (now sold), so I brought the oil back to the U.K. to use on my jukeboxes here.
As for the hit tracker, I know it is not needed for home use, but I would still like to get it working to keep the machine authentic.
Thanks again for the replies.

Hi Simon, I suggest you read the sticky on "Jukebox Lubrication" in our FAQ's section ! Ron Rich

Hi Ron,
I have read the lubrication section but how or where do you grease the various points. The photos are not very clear. Are there any better photos or videos of what to lubricate and where? For example, do you just apply grease to the cogs? If so, how much?
Thanks.
Simon

Hi Simon, ? I think it's easy to tell-Are you expanding the chart ?- IMHO, no grease (certainly NOT "AERO"--did you read the note ?), should be used, unless totally dry, then a very slight coating, where shown. Ron Rich

Simon, did you ever get your Hit-Tracker working? i have a 480 with a 52460-A Hit Tracker in it. The battery is an Eternacell No. 440s 3.0 volts. But if your displays aren’t even lighting up, I doubt that a new battery will change things.

OK I can add about 2 cents here-- Do NOT, EVER, rely on a LED to verify that the power on ANYTHING, is CORRECT ! The LED, in most cases, will illuminate when there is approximately, the correct power there, ONLY ! Use a GOOD meter, to verify the correctness of the power ! Ron Rich

Hi Rogerroll and Ron,
I changed the battery for a 3v button cell but nothing has changed. I am now looking to test the 9.6v feed - I believe you have to put your meter on the pink wire (it looks like two pink wires into the same pin) and the ground - is that correct? If it passes then I assume it's the pcb but if it fails will it be the profit setter or something else not supplying the correct voltage. I am about to buy a MESR 100 meter to check the capacitors in circuit - is this a good idea? As you can probably tell, I am not over confident in locating faults on PCB's but it will help me if anything goes wrong further down the line. I have checked all fuses as well.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Simon, I do not know what a "MESR" meter is ? On the fuses-- HOW didja "check" them-- correct size and type ? Meter each one out of it's holder ? Ron Rich

Hi,
I have confirmed that I have 9.66v coming out of the low power supply (pink wire and ground tested). I have replaced the 3v battery but The Hit Tracker still fails to work. Any ideas on what to check for next?
On a slightly different subject, what does the battery pack (battery pc board assembly 52255-A), behind the turntable, actually do? I cannot find anything that explains its purpose, except on an old post somewhere it stated to disconnect the battery completely.
Many thanks.
Simon

Hi Simon, I can't tell you exactly what it does on that model, but typically, it retains the memory for things such as "hits"--and money issues. Ron Rich

Hi Simon, You need a copy of the large fold-out schematic, see previous reply at the top! Norman.
