Need Help with 1458 Sound Problem - When I first turn on my machine and play a record it sounds great. But towards the end of the record, the volume drops and the sound becomes distorted/scratchy. Any other records played after the first will be the same - low volume and somewhat scratchy and distorted as if there was a lot of dust on the needle. If I turn the machine off and it rests for a while, it recovers, and when I play a record again after resting it sounds great again, but only for the first minute or so of the first record played, and then the same thing happens again. Any idea what the problem might be or what I should check?
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give!

Hi John, "Somethings" failing within the amp itself. If you are not able to determine amp problems, I suggest you find someone who has experience with that amp (see our repair persons, lists). Operating it in that condition, can cause major ($$) failures. Ron Rich

Hi Ron,
Good to hear from you! It has been a while. So, you also would guess that the issue is with the amp based on my description?
I have been assuming so also. Re-building the amp was the first thing I did when I began this restoration project, and at that time thought it was good to go, but not having the rest of the machine able to play yet, wasn't really able to fully confirm.
Now, that pretty much everything else on it is working again, this issue is the main thing standing out needing attention.
Yesterday I went through the amp and checked every resistor again, and did find a couple that were borderline and so I replaced those also. I played a couple records after going through all the resistors, and it volume dropped some again and sound quality went down again in the middle of the second record played. The first record sounded great!
Today, I will go over all the caps that were put in and try to see if any were bad, even though all are new when they were replaced last Fall which is when I started this project.
If that doesn't do it, then I will take it once again to my friend who is a professional, and have him do more trouble shooting on it.
Is there anything else that I should be thinking about that could be causing this though that you can think of besides the amp??
Thank you as always!

Thanks as always Ron. I did make some more progress on the three color buttons that are used to rotate the song title barrel to the three sections where the title strips are.
On Wed I will take the machine to my friends house who has a lot more testing equipment and he will help me with troubleshooting the sound problem.
I do have one question for you. Now that the mechanism and everything is at last moving. I am wondering what maintenance I should do to the "Selector Unit" which is on page 2 of the manual. The carriage Assembly goes around it on a track, I am wondering if I should put some graphite grease along this track where the metal little arms that come off off the Carriage assembly follow the grooves in the track on the Selector unit as it goes around searching for pins that have been moved out. The carriage moves along it fine now, but it seems so dry, I would think it would call for a little grease in there to lessen wear and tear.
Also, on the back side of the Selector Unit there is a ton of small metal plates, one for each son I assume, I am wondering if I should hit these with some Deoxit so as to get the best contact as possible? Sorry, I don't know the exact names on those, but will do some more research on them.
How have you been Ron? Doing ok since Covid came on the scene?

Hi John, I am not positive on what you are speaking of, but if "metal to metal" graphite grease can't (IMHO) hurt--- as for the "metal plates" if it's just a "touch type" contact, I would not want anything used on it that has anything left there. COVID19 has not hurt too much -- I have quit making house calls, but needed to quit that anyway as old age has caught up to my body-- Hope all's well there ! Ron Rich
