Hello, I'm a vinyl lover. Big collection of 45's, and I'm looking at jukeboxes to buy. I have a potentially strange question for you jukebox addicts. I live in the south of France, where it is very hot and dry from late spring to fall. My question is whether you think it would be a completely stupid idea to have a vintage jukebox outdoors on a covered terrasse/patio during the summer. I have a lot of outdoor space, which as I said, is covered, but not a lot of space in my house. I could imagine getting a lot of use out of it from May through mid-October. I realize that it would be more vulnerable to dust and insects entering the machine outside. What do you think? Thanks.

Hi Jay, I's not the dust/insects I'd worry about-- it's the heat and sunlight--records hate both ! Ron Rich

Hi Jay, I have seen the occasional jukebox outdoors in Italy, generally in covered areas or rolled out on to terraces in the evening. I wouldn't do that to my favourite jukebox but how about a budget model in a shaded area? Norman.

Thanks. Yes, it wouldn't be in the sun ( Ron Kansas City Rich). It's in a large covered terrace/patio. And yes, I was thinking about things on the cheaper end (in terms of the offerings). By the way, jukenorman , what would you consider "budget model"? I'm really new to this. I've found some in my area here in Provence, supposedly in good shape, for about 1,000 euros. Thanks again for your advice. J

Hi Jay, What I actually meant by "budget model" was something was was not too expensive - and being in good shape would be a bonus! Maybe if you let us know what is available in your area around the 1k euros, that would allow anyone who wanted to make a comment on suitability for outdoor use to do so. Norman.

Hi Guyz, My thoughts are-- if it is protected from the sun, plugged into a GFI circuit, in a dry spot, well protected from the sun, and wheeled inside at night, so moisture can not ruin it-- it should be OK ? Ron Rich

I think if we're me I would buy a nice Juke box one that I liked, and keep it in doors & get the appropriate wall box and some decent weather proof speakers, much easier to take a wallbox in and out of the house as required. Cheers Scudie

Hi Scudie, Excellent thought-- I did something like that for a local some years ago-- She wanted to be able to fill her large yard with sound, but not have "too much noise" indoors, where the phono was. I installed wiring so she could plug in her outdoor speakers, flip a switch which cut the indoor jukebox speakers way down, but allowed the outdoor ones to "blare" , when she increased the volume. A jukebox outside is a disaster waiting to happen. The sunlight as well as hot temperatures will melt/warp records! Not to mention spiders and mice finding their way inside the machine. Jukeboxes were made for INDOOR use only.
Best bet is to get a wallbox to connect to the jukebox. You leave the jukebox inside and install the wallbox and external speakers outside. You would still need to keep the wallbox out of direct sunlight though.

I have a 1954 Seeburg on a sceened patio in New Jersey. Summer temps get into 90’s F. No problems. Back in 60’s a lot of lakes and swim clubs had boxes outdoors if shaded.

They were probably rented, taking a lot of money and service people weren't far away.
Jukeboxes don't like extremes of temperature or damp conditions.
This is as close as mine get to being outside.
In the summer on hot days I leave the doors open, there's vents in the roof and at the bottom of the back wall, to get some air throughput, there's also an extractor fan.
Thery get a lot of use in the summer as I'm always doing stuff in the garden.
In the colder months they are covered with insulation
ibb.co/8gxXXbj
and have 60w heaters and rechargeable dehumidifiers inside them.
I also play a few tracks, every three days, just to "turn them over."
