New guy here...looking for some information. Just inherited a Rock-Ola 1442 that was in working condition, until I went to replace the Toner Arm Cartridge/stylus, with a new version of the exact same cartridge that was in the unit and working: Electro-Voice Part No. 417 "38". It's a ceramic mono cartridge I can see, because it has two copper wire terminals. The wire that connects includes a red wire, a black wire and a braded metal sheath around the wires. My problems started when I unscrewed the two wires and it all dangled, then broke its solder connection so I don't know which side is red and which side is black...or what to do with the braded metal sheath, because there was about 1/2" of that sheath as if it was connected somewhere. How I lost one of the female metal connectors is beyond me but its gone. Maybe its inside the unit somewhere. I searched and search for two new replacement female wire connectors and found two that are a little big, but look like they will work. They are 1/8" female connectors. I did not make solder connections, instead I folded the bare metal tabs over the bare wires and put it all together, figuring I have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. Problem is, that metal braded sheath had me wondering...was it supposed to be attached with the black wire to that same post as the black wire??? I ask because I did not attach the metal braded wire to either terminal and guessed it is only used for shielding of signals and to help keep the two wires together...but when I put it back together, I had no sound at all. So I then switched the red and black terminal connectors that attach to the cartridge...and still...no sound at all. Any suggestions? Thank you for your consideration
