Hi All,
This gets axked often enough that I'll make it a "sticky"--
Condition is: mech motor and TurnTable(TT) running--clamp arm out --but mech will not go into scan mode.
Causes: Safety plunger hanging up clutch connecting ("dog") link---or, frozen clutch yoke pin.
Fix: Removal of the mechanism from the cabinet is strongly suggested (see the "I & O Manual"--AKA "Maintance Manual', on some models). Remove all "gingerbread" from the RH end* of the record rack
* all models of the mechanism are ID'd as follows --Front, is where the reversing, or limit switches, is/are. Left side has the tone arm. Right side has the motor. Rear is the record rack.
Remove records in and around the area---
Lift the Detent release lever, turn motor coupler by hand, in the direction that pushes down on the top gear of the clutch assembly ( you can CAREFULLY "help" it by turning the TT softy--do not put pressure on the TT !!). Mech will (should) go into play position at this time. Lift the release lever again, continue to turn the coupler, while watching the safety plunger-- It MUST go all the way to the left before the dog can catch on it--should it hang up- reverse the direction of the TT, and "help" the plunger clear, while still turning the coupler, in the correct direction. Watch the brake cam follower. Once that has stopped turning the carriage may be in the scan mode--if not take your finger and push the rear of the clutch shifting assembly, into the scan cam notch. Mech may now be in scan mode--NOTE: If you have one of the newer mechs (models USC-1 thru STD-4, or one of the 100 select models built at the same time), be sure the sensors on the TMU contact block are set to a "neutral " position and can not be damaged if the mech scans in the "wrong direction" ! If still not in scan position, you may need a human helper for this-- Look around the back of the RH side of the mech.( records removed !), behind the motor, and casting. You can just see part of the clutch yoke. Using your helper, and a flat bladed screwdriver force down on the end of the yoke while turning the coupler--this will put the mech in scan position-- run it down to the RH end--remove clutch, clean/oil safety plunger and yoke assembly pin. See my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide" for further details. Ron Rich
