Hi Mike, You have enough carbon there to manufacture your own set of brushes lol! The armature should pull out. First, have you tried tapping the motor on the bench to dislodge the damaged brush? Then you could gently tap the spindle at the end for a start to move the armature. There are lots of sellers on ebay doing brushes for small power tools - measure the good one.

Hi Mike, Don't know about the UK-- here in the USA, ACE hardware stores, carry a line of small motor brushes-- Is there anything like that there ?

I got the old brush out by grinding it as it wouldn't budge otherwise.
I cleaned inside as best I could without removing the armature (just couldn't get it out). I made a new brush from an old washing machine brush. It's not quite the same size but the motor works again, although not as smooth as before. Hopefully it will bed in and improve.
I will look for a better fit in the meantime.
