I have no idea what a "gun oil" would do-- see the lubrication info in our FAQ's section-- That felt, should not look "red"-- that indicates it's short on the PROPER oil-- Did you also use that on the clutch spring-- ? I still think it's dry--somewhere-- Ron Rich

Where is the clutch spring? I've oiled everything I can.
I've continued troubleshooting for anything that may be the cause. Please excuse my ignorance :-)
Took a photo beneath the motor assembly. Is the bracket attached to the solenoid in the centre of the picture in the right place? I can't work out what the solenoid would do/move- it seems wrong. What is that solenoid's purpose? Should it be on the other side of the adjacent metal piece, or holding that metal piece?
Another photo. I found this piece at the bottom of the cabinet. What does it do? Could it be related to the problem? I don't think it is as has been there a long time.
Edit: I worked out what this is. It's the tone arm brush cable, and had been disconnected to stop the brush damaging the stylus. Unrelated to the problem, and I've left it disconnected.
I took a video of the lower carousel mechanism while rotating to the next record. Are the 2 metal discs in the centre of the video meant to collide rather than rolling over each other? They do when a record loads of course, but not sure if they should during the rotation?
Gotz the manual--parts book-??- no idea what that lever you found is-- ? see the last video-- clutch spring loos very dry from here -- its the large coil above the gear in the vid--And for the last time, do as asked/answer questions or I can not be of further help ! Ron Rich

After a lot of oiling, I fixed the problem and it's rotating records smoothly now. I found the seized section, which was between the 'tooth' section (lower part in photo) and adjacent section immediately above it (that it rotates against) of the selector shaft assembly. Once that interface was oiled and moving it started rotating ok :-)
I worked it out by comparing the 2204 with a nice fully working 1900 Centennial.
