AMi I number selection problem

Hello everyone. I'm grappling with a problem on a friend's AMi I, whereby it selects and plays fine, apart from any letter/number combination containing 16. He tells me that if you select 16 it plays 17. If you select 17, 18, 19 or 20 it plays those correctly. If you select any number up to 15 it plays those correctly also.
If it was a bad connection on the keybank, or pulse generator wipers surely it would miss a count, and play the selection before it ? The fact it's seemingly adding one is weird. And the issue only seems to be with 16 - if there was a bad count around that area I'm thinking that all subsequent numbers would be displaced as well when they are selected?
I've had a bad count on other machines, but they've always been missed pulses, not an additional one.
Any advice welcome, especially if this type of issue has been encountered before.
