Hi All I have an R86 that was working fine. However, after moving house, the machine will only play in low volume (the machine was packed and bolted down correctly for moving). The volume knob on the rear of the box has no effect. There is sound coming from all speakers top and bottom. You can hear the selection ok (it’s a little on the low side) but just no ability to turn up or down. All what I think are relevant connections have been unplugged and plugged back in and checked visually. Are the volume knobs known to fail or require cleaning. Or maybe an amplifier issue? Any thoughts or advice greatly received.

My GUESS is-- Your phono had a "rough ride"- You have broken the two mini lamps used for the volume control "ballast", on the PC Board. I do not recall the correct lamp number but I do know two #2182's in series, can be used for each one-- suggest you use some "RVT" to stick them to the board. Ron Rich

Thanks Ron. Strangely, the problem has changed! When I returned to the machine to look at your suggestions the selection will now play and the volume will go up and down. However, the sound is crackling badly from all speakers.

No problem-- it ain't 'dumb" to ask questions, when you don't understand ! RTV is another name for glue-- the bathtub sealant used around the tile to keep the water out--Ron Rich

Hi Ron Gotcha. We call it silicone sealant or mastic in the UK. That’s the confusion ! 😁
I’ve had the pay board off and all the joints look sound. It was serviced and repaired by Alan Hood (Ami man) in 2019 and it all still seems in order. Unfortunately Alan doesn’t seem to be around anymore.
It’s odd, it’s kind of ok playing at low volume but now ‘breaks up’ when volume turned up.

Ha. No problem. Any idea on where else to look?
I’ve been all over the pay board joints and all contacts are sound.
Thanks

Hi Stuart, OK--- This is why you, and everyone is asked to read the "Hi Newbies" post in our FAQ's section, and fill in their information in the User Introductions section posts-- ANYTHING I have told you about this amp has been nothing but a waste of time !! You did not say you were in the UK--This is NOT an AMi/Rowe built item-- It was made only for use in the UK-- I have never seen one in person-- there is a discussion below and a photo of it posted.
