Ron, Is it necessary to replace the tone arm damping fluid in the C and R 100 mechs? Is it even possible to do that? In your experience, does it harden or become more viscous?

Hi Steve, I have only seen a few where the red glypt (Glyptol), has failed to hold on the old mono arms--at which point, I just replaced the arms--Ron Rich

Why bother. All damping does is increase the effective mass of the arm. I've used Seeburgs commercially for 32 years with damping removed. A total of over 3 million plays. I have never has a broken or damaged stylus. If the arm assembly is properly set up there will be no "bouncing".
In the early 1980's I asked the head of the service dept. at Albert Simon co. (Seeburg dist) why the arms were damped when no one else did this. Quoting: It is to stop the arm from skipping around when people bump the machine.
