Hi gents. I am new to the forum and have a background in restoring old gas pumps, coke machines, cars, trucks etc. I’ve also done some basic repair and maintenance on a 1970’s pinball machine I have.
I’ve always wanted to get into the hobby of repairing or restoring jukeboxes, and I’ve finally taken the leap!
I’ve been wanting a box for my shop, which looks like an old gas station and I found a Rowe AMI mm1 jukebox locally this week. I got it very reasonably, and it comes with the age old story that it kind of works. It does have over 1/2 the records in it, and it does light up when plugged in, but that’s about all I know about it.
My first step was to give the whole thing a level 1 tidy inside and out, and it is in remarkably good shape once cleaned up. There are a couple of cosmetic part issues, but everything seems to be there mechanically.
I’ve already ordered a shop manual for this machine, but it will be a week or 2 before it arrives, which leads to a few questions I have for you jukebox gurus!
I would love any inputs on how far I should go in cleaning the mechanical parts at this time, and any suggestions on what the best way to go about perhaps removing and cleaning parts or components would be greatly appreciated!
I would also love some direction on how I should go about powering the box up, and testing where it is at as it sits. I’m sure there might be a right way and a wrong way, or order to go about figuring out what works and what doesn’t, and then troubleshooting them.
And finally some questions on parts; in the coke machine world there are a few repop parts companies for most machines; is that the same for jukeboxes?
The transparent “scene” panel on the front panel of my unit must have been broken years ago, and was replaced by a piece of oak plywood. Are parts like that lower front visual panel available out there, or will I need to find someone that has a parts machine that might sell me stuff like that?
Any inputs or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I will likely be leaning heavily on this forum while I educate myself on resurrecting old jukeboxes!
