What does it say in the manual? I don't have an R88 manual but if it's the same as the R87, you would't want to be installing 4 ohm ones!

The manual states 30 ohm speakers are fitted. I have recently replaced mine with a pair of Fenton 10 inch 8 ohm 125 watt drivers with no ill effects to the amplifier. I would think that 4 ohm speakers would be too low impedence and may put undue stress on the amplifiers output stages.

It wasn't the amplifier I was concerned about, it was the sound balance between the lower and upper speakers. The output transformer assy pretty much protects the amp outputs.
The two 10 inch speakers (30 ohm) are wired in parallel and see the summation of both stereo channels. On the face of it, it would seem better to wire the replacement 8 ohm loudspeakers in series to present approximately the same loudspeaker impedence. However these Fentons do appear to be quite inefficient. How does your jukebox sound - is it bass heavy?

No, it's not particularly bass heavy at all, in fact the sound seems more balanced and clearer. To be fair though the foams on the original speakers were pretty well shot.

Just for the record, replacing perished foam surrounds on loudspeakers is much more straightforward that one might imagine and well within the capabilities of the average DIY-er.
