I have a 2300S which has some issues with selecting the correct record, jamming when the lift arm raises, etc. Most of these appear to be related to the arm on the coin box side of the mechanism. (I.E., RIGHT side viewed from front, Left side viewed from rear.). I know the backstop pawls are moving freely, clean and and dry. I do not know they are anywhere near their original factory position. Prior to me getting this far, I had to replace both side's guide tips as they were smashed away. Here is what I know: Non-coin box side lift arm appears to be closer to midway between front and back of "T shaped opening in base, than the coin box side arm. That one is located more off-center toward the front of the box. I don't know if these have ever had the baseplate moved or the arm position adjusted. I am not even sure, given how these things work, whether the correct arm is lifting the correct record. I have read the manual many times, worked over all the electrical issues, and what remains is all manual mechanism adjustments.
SO, questions:
1). Which side is supposed to lift odd numbers, and which side the even ones?
2). When I rotate the record carrier and pull it back against an even numbered stop, the record selected shows in good alignment in the 'record now playing' window. If I select an odd number, the alignment is off-center to the left, half way out of the box. ODD number records lift from my non-coin-box side, even numbers from my right.
Should I be using this to try to figure out where 'zero' alignment is at all?
It seems like 'Record Now Playing' should align pretty well with the data printed on the record carrier....but it's only 1/2 good, and the half that's good is the side that has lift alignment issues. I don't seem to have any decent reference to START checking from, and no confidence that someone before me in the years since 1959 hasn't changed EVERYthing about alignment.
3. How do I figure out whether the bracket and roller assembly has been moved on the base plate?
I suspect that one or both are not in proper factory location BUT I also suspect this is one of those "OH MY GOD, don't DO that!" sort of adjustments. SO, they remain untouched, or at least as they were when I bought them from the dude who botched up the box before me, 25 years ago.
I have worked through most of the other issues, new guide tips, etc., recapping the amp, and it sounds good to me. But where do I even start to re-align a mechanism in which 'ground zero' for lift arm location, carrier stop position, and all that jazz are unknowns? I understand the baseplate is supposed to be scribed at the factory alignment, but I sure can't see anything.
Suggestions??
