Hello all,
I was playing music on my Wurlitzer 1100 when the volume started to fade.
I switched off straight away and smelt a burning smell.
Smoke is coming from the rear of the speaker.
The 2 amp fuse in the amp had also blown.
Can anyone please provide me with some direction on what I should be checking?
Cheers Gordon...

I don't have 1100 documentation but if smoke is coming from the speaker, then it's likely to be an issue with the field coil. Do you have a specialist speaker rebuilder close?
Norman.

Hi Norman, I appreciate your reply.
Unfortunately I have very little hope of finding someone to repair a field coil speaker in Australia. I may need to try to source a used one from the US.
Is there anything I could try to repair it?
Also, What would cause it to go without warning? Something wrong in the amp?
Cheers Gordon....

Hi Gordon, As I said, I don't have 1100 documentation so I can't really help a lot more. I recall that the speaker field coil has a dual role in that it also acts as a choke (smoothing) in the amplifier power supply. First thing is to verify that it is indeed the field coil that is the problem. Victory Glass (maybe others?) sell replacement field coils.
Norman.

G'Day Norman,
Thanks for the response. I have been fortunate enough to find someone in Sydney who is willing to look at the amp and speaker for me. He believes the problem may lie within the amp, which in turn has damaged the speaker. I can drop it off next week. I'll let you know the outcome.
Cheers Gordon
