I have a Rockola 450 and the gripper arm gets stuck after it returns the record. I have used your information to oil it and it will work great for a while. Then after I stop it for a bit and try again it will get stuck again. I can get it to work if I move the base of the gripper back and forth. Should I just keep oiling it and working it in? I am on my 3rd can of 3 in 1 motor oil. Everything else works fine. Thank you for your time.

Hi Pattit0, Are you sure you followed ALL of the instructions ?? Especially #'s 1 and 6 ?? If so,m you probably will need to dis-assemble/clean it-- Ron Rich

johnlivo The youtube video link below is of a man taking apart a Rockola 490 gripper assembly, cleaning and reasembly. There are actually 4 videos on refurbishing and adjustments on the 490.
Moderator edit: Watched this vid- I dis-agree with the procedure shown, slightly -- RockOla ( as well as AMi) greased the assembly, with a graphite based grease. In my humble opinion, using 20 wt. motor oil , is correct--HOWEVER, if a small amount of graphite grease is used, this job will never need repeating, as graphite grease is soluble with 20 wt. oil. If no grease is used, the oil will dry out and you will suffer "sticking" much sooner ! The key place to grease is between the two gears and on the center spring loaded section as described in a post above. Ron Rich

click on the video to watch the gripper in action, once you see how the outer gear tightens the gripper on the record and the inner gear moves the arm you can understand what starts to bind up. IMG_0373 by CLINTON DUBHORN, on Flickr

Thanks Ron Rich for this post. It solved my problem with a RockOla 449 that wasn't picking up the records after they had played. Kate
