I have a 100BL with a lower fluorescent ballast wire hanging on by its last strand. One wrong move and I lose power to the animation motor and fluorescent light. I see tabs on the ballast. Is it possible to open it and repair the wire connection?

Early ballasts are usually potted or encapsulated.
This may prevent you from opening the shell, and it may prevent access to the wire connections. This will vary from ballast to ballast.
The only way you can find out is by trying to open it.
Are the conductor strands really broken or just the insulation? If it's just the insulation some heat shrink tubing may rescue the situation.

Is the ballast on this model the standard type? (It is on my DS.) if so, you can get a new one at Home Depot.

Inductive (or magnetic) 25w ballasts are no longer manufactured. Home Depot probably won't have an inductive ballast over 20 watts (if they have any inductive ballasts). Using an electronic ballast as a replacement will require a wiring change. Edit: This ballast will work, but buy it now before they are gone...

What would happen if a 20W magnetic ballast were used?

It would overheat.
See my post above... I just edited it with an eBay link.
