Does anyone know if Rockola amplifier 54510-A can be used as a direct substitute for amplifier 52280-A? The front of the amplifiers look identical. The power input jack and the speaker input jack also appear to be the same.

Yes I know! It's not a direct replacement but it would not be overly difficult to make it work. I have done it the other way round by using a 52280-A to replace a 54510-A but I had to rewire the loudspeakers and phono cartridge - ie configure it like the models that the 52280-A was used in. I suspect you would have to configure yours like the 490 models (which are wired like the AMi stereo-rounds). The 52280-A was used in quite a number of models so should not be overly difficult to find.

Thanks Norman,
I have the 477 Maxx currently using the 52280-A and there is no left channel output. Since the power-input, speaker-output, and phono-in jacks are the same on the 54510-A as on the 52280-A I was hoping to just switch the 54510-A in place of the 52280-A as is without any modifications.

Have you thought about fixing the 52280-A? If you switch the amp to mono, do you get sound from the left channel?

When switching the amp to mono, sill no sound from left channel. I have not really done any real troubleshooting of the problem. When I ran across the available 54510-A I thought this could be a quick fix of the problem. I also believe the 2 amps in the 54510-A are the same as in the 52280-A. I would try and do some swapping. I did check the output of the phono cartridge and I am getting a left and right signal. I have also seen a lot of talk about replacing all of the capacitors. I think that would only improve sound quality, but no totally sure.

Sorry, sorry, sorry. I just double checked. The replacement amp IS a 52280-A. Therefore I am replacing my existing NON-WORKING 52280-A with a direct replacement. I am so sorry for the confusion. But what I have learned is that a 54510-A would also work with some modification!!!!
