This only seems to happen when you first turn it on and only after a few selections then it seems ok?? Crazy- right? RW

If the motor coasts it is due to the slip clutch not disengaging. The rotor of the gripper motor should pop backwards slightly the instant power is cut. This is a common problem on motors that have been run dry too long or improperly oiled.
You can try using a light (10wt) oil on both ends of the rotor shaft. If you have the enclosed gearbox motor which is likely, you can drill a small 1/8 -1/4 hole near one corner so as to allow a hose oiler to lube the internal gears. Be careful to not allow the drill bit to get inside the box and damage the gears.
I believe those older motors were made by Multi-Products:https://www.multiproducts.com/ They still have a rebuld service and/or can replace the motor. There should be a spec # somewhere stamped on the gearbox.

RW, I use what Multi-products recommends (once a year), on them--20 wt. ND oil-- Oil both ends of the exposed armature shaft, then fill the 2, extremely large felt pads several times with oil. That "cures" it ! Ron Rich
