When the magazine switch is set to “operate” the motor runs and the drive gear tries to turn but acts like the mechanism is jammed. It appears that the gear at the back of the gripper arm shaft is out of alignment and the small teeth are jamming on the larger area of the mating gear. Any assistance appreciated!

Hi Greg, Gottum the Service Manual ?? Did you just acquire this phono, or have you had it awhile--When was the last time it was properly lubricated ? Teeth alignment is shown in manual -- loosen three motor screws--move motor from "teeth" --can you now turn the basket ? Ron Rich

I have the service manual and have had the machine about 20 years. The machine was last serviced about 2 years ago and was working fine until tone arm would not lift after record ended. Attempted to adjust tone arm switch and heard something lock up.
Turning switch to operate causes motor to run but gear on gripper shaft does not turn. Looked at the back of the shaft where the two gears are and found that they appear to be jamming with small teeth trying to mesh with corresponding area with no teeth. Removed rear most gear and are able to get gripper arm to move and pick up record and place on TT. Replacing rear gear causes gripper arm to jam again on next record.

May I put my two cents in on your issue. I have 424 setting behind me right now as I write this response. This box I had restored for someone exactly 20 yrs ago. It started having the same or similar issue you are having. It seems the gripper motor would try to pick up a record but would jam. You can see the stress on the motor as it was trying move the gears but the gears just froze. I would put the play switch into the off position and then manually back the motor out of the bind by turning the motor shaft by hand. As soon as I put the switch back into play mode, the motor would go right back trying the pick up the record out of the magazine and go into the bind again. Then I decided to take the whole gripper mechanism out. I did a partial disassembly of the gripper release gears, lubricated and reassembled. After I reassembled the gripper mech, I manually tried it out by hand and everything seemed to be working. Put the gripper mechanism back into the jukebox. When to turn it back on and the exact same thing happened again. So back to the drawing board. One thing I noticed though was that the gripper would never fully open. So again I took the gripper mech out and started messing with it by hand. Seeing how the gears were interlocking with each other. Then I noticed what I had overlooked before. The Trunnion Shaft (the part that turns to open and close the gripper itself) was froze solid. I couldn't turn it even with using pliers. This is what caused my motor to lock up. It would get to the point to grip a record then freeze putting my motor in a bind. I took some penetrating fluid and sprayed inside this shaft to try and break it loose. Finally I was able to turn it enough to work its way out of the gripper spider assembly. Once I got it out I noticed the grease that was used on it from 20 yrs ago was tacky and partially hardened. I cleaned all of the old grease off, used better grade grease on everything and reassembled. BOOM! It started to work like a top.

Hello, Marty, Louisville, Colorado, I just recently purchased a Princess Royal 424 and the gripper arm is stuck in the vertical position. When I select a song, the selector lever spins to the correct selection, however because the gripper arm is stuck, the turntable and magazine do not turn. After the selector level spins something shorts out and I can see a spark near the low volt power. Sounds like I need to clean and re-grease, specifically the trunnion shaft? Are there any diagrams available for the gripper assembly or can anyone give me basic advice on disassembling? Or could there be something else I need to consider? Thanks in advance. Marty

Hi Marty, Welcome ! PLEASE read the above "sticky" on common Rowe/AMi-RockOla grippers-- I have NEVER seen one that did not respond to the above, unless "someone" mixed grease in it ! I have let some "sit" for a day or so, soaking in the oil---Ron Rich
