Two quick questions. First this is a Y 160 using TSR 7 Tormat selector unit and SHFA 5 Amplifier. Question #1: On the RCA plug that connects to the pulse amplifier, what should the DC resistance be on the 2 pins of the RCA plug? Unit is failing the battery test yet if I insert a minature phillips screwdriver into the socket on the pulse amp during mech scanning, the mech will trip. Question #2. During Mech scanning there is a popping sound coming from the speakers. both plugs (cartridge and mute) unpluged, still pops, both 6EU7 tubes removed, still pops. Volume control at zero, removed 7199 from channell 2 still pops, removed 7199 from channell one and the popping sound goes away. Detent switch contacts on mech are clean. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. Norman

Norma, I'll answer in numerical order: 1) 1-2 ohms. It is just a loop. Do wiggle it and check for a short in the plug itself. With desired readings so close to a dead short visual inspection is required as well. 2) If the mute plug is removed you will hear noise as the mech scans. If you short pins 1&5 on the amp to chassis ground you should hear nothing as mech scans. Also, use these pins on the mech cable to check for proper grounding action during all phases except play. The fact that it seems to be only on one channel indicates faulty mute contacts or a broken wire in the harness. The plug & socket may also have some resistance. Try rocking that plug while the mech scans to see what effect it has. The fact that you still have noise with the volume control @ "zero" is odd. I'd check for good low-side (ground) connection of that pot section. The failure to trip with the battery test indicates a readout problem. If you don't have a simplified diagram, use this one: s1192.photobucket.com/user/Rob-NYC/media/readout1_zps02fc8353.jpg.html?sort=2&o=58 It is for a TSR-3 but the circuit is the same. Be sure that the Tormat is properly aligned. This along with improper detent switch timing will cause sparking and excess noise into the sound system. Rob-NYC

Rob: As to the failure to pass the Battery test I am just going to take it to a shop in North Carolina to be fixed. As to the popping as the carrage scans, you got it right. I adjusted the Detent switch per the shop manual and the popping went away. Again thanks for your help. Norman
