Why would the leads on some diodes be looped? And is it necessary to keep them that way?

Stephen, They are looped to keep the diodes off the board--so are other components that heat up. Heat does no good for the PCB's. YES ! Ron Rich

Thanks Ron. I assumed it was for heat but wasn't sure what the loop would do over just raising the diode up off the board. I guess the extra length of lead works like a heat shield then, giving that much more wire to dissipate the heat.
