Hi,
I powered up a 100R for the first time the other day. I recapped everything and did my best to clean and service all of the major items. The good news is that nothing smoked and no fuses or circuit breakers blew!
First thing I noticed was that the unit was on "free play". What I found was that the reset bracket for the 6 snap action switches was bent out of the way, that was an easy fix. I also noticed that the timing relay contacts L and M in the WSR were bent when I went through it, but I think this was maybe to put a wallbox on freeplay? I don't have the 2050 tube installed, but I did replace the "big" cap associated with this area. At some point I'd like to get a wallbox...
The next thing I noticed is that none of the pins will move when a selection is made. The 1 amp slow blow fuse has not blown, and the credits are subtracted and the counter increments. There was originally a 15 amp fuse in the 1 amp fuse holder (!), which I found concerning. I took the top cover off the electrical selector and found 3 of the ground wires had fallen off the grounding switch plates, and also all of the grounding switch/grounding contacts were dirty. I also checked the resistances of all the group coils, they all measured around 3.6-3.8 ohms (reference manual page 2133 Figure 30). I didn't clean any of the step bar or step washers though. Is that something I should go back and do?
If I manually select a pin, the mechanism will move and stop at the pin, I've also noticed that the cancel solenoids do not fire. Fortunately, the mechanism seems to scan and select correctly.
The selection cancel problem seems fairly straightforward based on the picture diagram (page 93). Some guidance around what to check for getting the pins to move would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Bill, Very FIRST you need to do NOW, is re-check that "easy fix" on the cancel ramp ! It MUST be checked on all 6 switches, several times, for an extremely smooth action, or it will "catch" and "snap off" one, or more, of those switches !! With the power OFF, actuate the sub coil plunger s-l-o-w-l-e-y, several times while watching the "selected" (on) switches pass thru-- they must not be "flexed" they should "snap firmly" when tat ramp is correctly bent ! ( I remove the CCU when doing this to see it better --) The L & R contacts in the WSR have no bearing on the pricing of any, Wall O Matic, as each one has it's own pricing unit. What are you calling the "Electrical Selector" ?? In "Seeburg-ease", that's the name they use for a "Keyboard" -- I assume you are speaking "WurliTzer" here, and that you are referring to the "Selection Assembly Unit" ( SAU,or,aka:"pinbank"). If the group contact grounding wires have "un-soldered" (common!), it will miss selections. IF it makes NO selections, the SAU needs to be dis-assembled, and cleaned --or the contacts in the CCU are dirty, maladjusted. Or you have "Electrical Selector" problems--- Ron Rich

Hi Ron,
Thanks for the comments.
I've been able to fix most of the small problems, but still haven't been able to get a pin to move on the pinbank. I can see the group magnet pulse and move the 20 pin top ground plate, and I can see AC voltage applied across a selector coil when a selection from the keyboard is made, but still no movement of a pin.
I would like to isolate/bench test (in situ) the pinbank to see if I can get a pin to move, without the rest of the system involved.
Is a reasonable test method to unplug the pinbank 27 pin connector from the WSR, then jumper 25VAC from the wallbox outlet jack on the WSR to pins 1 & 27 on the pinbank connector, and manually move the group magnet plate? I believe this would energize the coil for "A1" and it should pull in. I could also jumper directly across the coil as well.
The last thing I want to do is burn up a coil and create additional problems...
Thanks, Bill

Bill, If you read AC going to the individual coil, the problem most likely is in the SAU itself--needs to be dis-assembled and cleaned---timing relay contacts as well as setting (See--65 "lbs" note in Service Manual)could also be a problem-- lol. Yes you can supply 25 vac tom a coil--just be sure you don't do so for long ! Ron Rich

Thanks Ron.
I think most of my problem is lack of understanding on how the pinbank is supposed to work...my novice interpretation is that each selector coil, when energized, becomes a magnet, and will pull-in it's associated pin...so to get the pin to move, it's just a matter of powering the coil and making sure there isn't a mechanical obstruction/too much friction that would prevent the pin from moving?
I understand that when the pin moves to the "selected" position, it provides a contact within the pinbank that switches power to the motor, so at that time the little slider associated with the pin movement is an active part of the circuit, I've seen that part work.
Is the pin/slider part of the circuit that causes the pin to move in the first place? I guess this is what you're telling me by stating it needs to be cleaned...
Thanks again for your help.

Bill, No, the slider (aka "washer") serves only to energize the play control relay in the WSR. The two circuits are independent of each other. Ron Rich

Hi Ron,
After way too much dorking around, I found the 1 ohm 4 watt resistor in the CCU was partially burned up and was reading a high resistance in the kohm range. It looked great from the top view (what I could easily see) but the bottom was split and burned, which I only was able to see after I cut the resistor out. I need to learn to trust the meter more...
Fortunately, I had a spare resistor of the same spec, and now all is well.
Any ideas what would have caused this? Set to free play without the adapter?
Thanks again for your help.

Bill, I don't think we can blame "free play" on this--just "old age"-- Ron Rich

Agree with Ron there,at my old age various parts of me are burning out too! Mick
