I pulled this stylus from my 404 (1963). Parts Manual isn't much help. Can someone tell me what part (brand/number) I should be looking for? Also, (if you know) what cartridge might be installed? Is there a cartridge/stylus upgrade I can do to improve sound quality and/or help save vinyl? This thing looks rather archaic! I'm already looking at making a clear molded dome to cover the magazine. Thanks in advance! Attachments:

Michael, PLEASE READ, the FAQ's section--parts suppliers are listed there--if you check the listed ones, you will find the replacement for that needle ( Looks good to me, in the photo ?) Ron Rich

Thanks for the push to the FAQs. With enough research one can certainly get their own answers there. I see that many people, including myself tend to post here for quick answers from 'experts' because its easier, faster, and tends to be less confusing, particularly because follow-up questions can be submitted. It is however, probably best that we do the research ourselves. I did so in this case and here is what I found (I'll post here so that others who may be looking in future may benefit from my time spent): The 404 shipped with an Astatic N15/43D Cartridge (Catalog Part Number 35122) with an N15 Stylus (Catalog Part Number 35227). Exact replacement cartridges are no longer manufactured and are extremely difficult to find and at best would be a used cartridge when you can find one. The Pfanstiehl P-132D cartridge and needle is a good modern replacement which should drop right in. I have yet to order one but resources found here in the FAQs indicate that it will. Replacement Stylii for the original cartridge can be found, typically listed as an Astatic 15D Stylus. These do not look exactly like the original as they only have one 'arm' instead of two (see images) but fit and function properly. Thanks again Ron!

Hi Michael, Yep--the "FAQ's" section is there so that this "expert" does not need re-wright the same answers over and over--BTW--do you know what an "expert" is ?? If not, I'll tell you. An "EX" is a past--sorta like an ex boy/girl friend, or spouse. A (s)pert, is just a little drip ! Ron Rich
