Painting Transformers

Many of the tranformers on my various controllers and amps have a coat of rust on them.  So far I've left them alone.  Is it okay to sand them down and then paint them?  Would I need a high heat paint?  Even though they aren't typically seen I'd like to clean them up.

Many people paint them--what ever tickels your "fancy"--or whatever-- won't make them work better ---
