I suppose that's possible but there are more elegant solutions. One can buy a free play device that takes the place of the credit unit so no coins are necessary. My Seeburg V200 allows 24 credits by inserting 4 quarters. There is a credit wheel that moves to add or subtract credit. It has 24 teeth in it so once it reaches the limit it can't turn any further. My coin operated devices are all set to work on coins. I have 6 pinball machines and none are set on free play. I have a drawer with nickles, dimes, and quarters which are used to operate the games and the jukebox. As far as the concern with the latch solenoid, I bought and installed a latch solenoid saver device which attaches to the dual credit unit. The credit unit works as normal except the latch solenoid doesn't latch until one number or letter key is pressed. After 10-15 seconds if a key isn't pressed to complete the selection the latch solenoid releases.

Sure--but if you have a later DPU, they added a 1/2 Amp SB fuse to the credit circuit ( which SHOULD be added to all), which will likely blow, once in a while, if that button is held in too long. Re-read the "sticky" at the top of this thread---Ron Rich {EDIT} The free play unit is also now available with a switch to use it with coins, for all model Seeburgs, except for a couple of the 100 select models and the LPC series phono's--sometimes, as the plugs are NLA---yes, I sell them.

On my 201 and DS160 I used the method that was in 'Always Jukin' years ago where you wire the solenoid so that it only comes on when you make a selection, i.e. when you press a letter. Of course if you pressed a letter and walked away it would be a problem, but for home use it works for me and it is easy to do.

Yep--that can be done--however on the later pricing units, you run the danger of blowing the credit add fuse--better then blowing that coil ! Nothing will happen after max credits are reached. Ron Rich

Itz "not advisable"--risk of blowing fuse--nothing--31 teeth is max that wheel will go--Ron Rich

Hi - was reading above and recently acquired a 1967 seeburg stereo showcase ss-160. It would not load credits, I replaced a fuse and took the mechanism the coins come thru and straightend the bars which were bent by us reaching up and flicking them as kids to simulate credits. It is loading now and that hum is gone but believe it is a solenoid by the right side of the cabinet (facing it) underneath the credit lit and a little white bar next to it get very hot. if I am reading this correctly it would be better to work the credits off? The machine is playing and sounds pretty good but hadn't been used in 25 years or maintained/oiled since at least 30 plus years. Have stated in on some of that. The records dont always pick up correctly put retuen ok .. it seems to be getting closer. Any advise for someone obviously new to this?

Yes--you can--no, you should NOT do so, especially on DCU/DPU's that are not, equipped with a 1/2 amp, SB coin fuse ! Ron Rich

WARNING, on all Seeburgs ( and some Rock-Ola's), which use the Guardian built solenoid, to lock the selection keys. That solenoid is NOT designed for "constant use" ! Also, remember a "Jukebox" was never designed to "play for free" -- therefore if one "jury-rigs" a coin op phono to play for free, and it is the type that use the above solenoid--one has a potential ( and OFTEN, a true) fire HAZARD !! The ONLY safe way to "free play" these phono's is to use an electronic "free play unit/adapter", that automatically, turns off the power to that solenoid, at ANY TIME, it has been powered over 45 seconds ! (This is not true for the Guardian (or other brand) built coils, used in WurliTzer phono's, as they have a constant duty, hold circuit). Ron Rich EDIT: I have mixed feelings, as this may not prevent a fire--but so far has proven to do so, in my experience. Add a 3 amp fast blow fuse onto the "hot side" of the cable going to the solenoid--do this right at the solenoid. Another factor to consider--make sure the 10 watt, 100 ohm resistor is there (falls off on some models), connected still, and good ! it is easy enough to build a 3 relay free play faux credit unit
find compatible plugs. for the round 12 pin an old DPU works great for a box.
V through LS-2 compatible
when the parallel keyboard switches make, the solenoid relay pulls in. 24 vac to solenoid and, opens -dc to the time out relay.
when the series contacts all make [with the over center springs] the selection relay pulls in
and it makes the selection pulse, adds at the play [scan] control [motor] relay, opens 24VAC to the solenoid
[ optionally you can have it blink the make selection light ] if the second button is never pushed the time out relay drops and also opens the 24VAC to the solenoid,
the first button pushed is thereby released and the latch relay opens, thus resetting the time out relay.
counter EMF diodes on each relay and caps to suit timing for the relay current
oops I drew the diodes backwards
oops the solenoid C3 contact is NO [shown NC because the time out C3 relay is always on except when latched] oops the solenoid C2 contact was drawn NC also wrong. [or I just sim-labeled them]
that is to say the system is shown power on at idle.
the cap on the C3 relay should be the biggest and perhaps a 10 ohm in that series to limit inrush current. NOTE the C2 select relay switches [with the over center springs] make their way to ground through the stepper such that the KB selection is delayed if the stepper is in use [may result in inadvertent time out] also if the stepper wheels are sticky and not always returning to rest the time out may appear as a selection but nothing happens.

So I have and r that someone wired a free play and reject button I am assuming this what we are talking about? if so what brand should I be looking to replace this?
