I'm curious about the two metal channels on the edges of the cabinet on my wallbox. They appear to be have polished aluminum finish instead of chrome plating like the rest of the cabinet. Is this normal? Also, a friend and I were trying to remember... When someone played a song from an SC wallbox, did the music play at all of the other boxes connected or just the one where the song was paid for? Enquiring minds...

Yes, alu and these got a bit etched by the stripper I used in cleaning. They polish up using just about anything, I used Novus#2 plastic polish because I have a large amount.
If you are the first box to select the sound is only at your table, however, if others select before the mech scans out and stops you'll hear their selection too.
On the later type with a scan ratchet the speakers switch off after on your box after the mech makes two scans -even if others are still playing because they selected after you and haven't scanned out yet.
The first set of SC's I used in Sept 1990 I added a timer in the hideaway that kept the audio control line closed from around 3:00Pm till midnight. the idea was to have speakers add as more boxes were used. At point I had not added ceiling speakers to this location and having a lot of wallbox units playing made the place more enjoyable.

I'm having the rest of the cabinet re-chromed and was wondering if those should be chrome too. Any idea why they weren't chrome originally?

Steve, it was probably just economy. Why bother plating a part that small and chrome just adds glare where people are trying to read the titles.

UPDATE: I received my Wallbox2mp3 emulator yesterday, got it hooked up and tested. The good news is that the wallbox works great selecting songs correctly. There is some sort low level of parasitic hum from the emulator when songs are played. It's only noticeable at very low volumes. I suppose I can live with it for the price but it sort of sucks none the less. My problem is trying to use the wallbox volume control. I figured out how to connect my iPod through it and it worked well. The wallbox however doesn't work with a common speaker ground. I did a slight modification to the wallbox volume control to try and isolate the grounds to the separate speakers (see photo) and got it working with my iPod but no luck with the emulator. It works fine on High but on Middle and Low settings there's some crossflow that causes the stereo to become mono and creates distortion. The distortion is particularly bad on the low setting. Has anyone ever dealt with this or have any suggestions? I'd really like to be able to use the volume buttons and not have to drill a hole in the cabinet to mount the external volume pot that came with the emulator.

Steve, Why don't you talk to the sellers of that product ?? Ron Rich I will. Hopefully they can address the parasitic noise but, concerning the volume control, my guess is that they will suggest using the external volume control that they provided. I was just hoping someone here might have dealt with this issue or have a suggestion to work around the problem.

Problem solved! I had the ground wires that go from the volume control to the speakers backwards. I also made a couple more modifications in case anyone's interested. I replaced the 10 ohm with 20 ohm resistors. This seems to cut both low and medium volume levels a little so the control is a little more usable now. There wasn't much volume change before. I also clipped the two of the 220 ohm resistors out of the circuit. Now when none of the volume buttons are pushed in the sound is cut off completely. Perfect for using the aux output with a Bluetooth transmitter so there's no "echo" effect because of the Bluetooth delay. Sounds great through my stereo system.
