Hi Guys, My 1961 Valve AMI Continental Juke box that has been working for the past 30 years has now developed a fault. When powered up the turn table operates with out selecting a record. When pushing the 'cut off' toggle switch on the control box forward the latch Bar solenoid energises. When pulling the toggle switch back to manually rotate the record magazine nothing happens ? Where should I be looking, 'transfer motor relay box', 'camshaft switches', 'transfer switches', 'sprag relay' ? Can you please assist. Thanks Rob

Hi Rob, If the turntable is running, then Cam Switch 1, CS1, hasn't opened. If the magazine doesn't rotate using the scan switch, then CS2 isn't closed. Have a look at the transfer motor, it appears that the transfer cycle hasn't fully completed somehow? Is the gripper arm fully open over the magazine? Norman.

HI Norman, Thanks for the response... I will look at the Scan Switches and let you know. Thanks again.

Hi Norman, As you have picked up it does appear that the transfer cycle has not been fully completed. When switching on I have noticed that the Transfer motor is running continuously(as is the turn table motor)and not engaging with the transfer gearbox/assembly. The gripper arm is positioned over the magazine BUT with the gripper shoes extended gripping the record. In this 'rest 'position the assembly crank and link do not form a straight line as the Service manual shows? I am able to manually lift the gripper together with the record, take it and place it on the record turn table. In this 'playing' position once again the assembly crank and link do not form a straight line. There must be something I can activate to complete the cycle ? Can you please advise? Thanks Rob (I am in Johannesburg South Africa).

Hi Rob, I'm guessing from your description that a gear has stripped in the transfer motor gearbox (this is not uncommon). I thought you might have been able to get a replacement gear wheel at jukebox-world.de but this does not seem to be the case. You can get a complete motor / gearbox (uprated) there though. I'm not sure if this is your only option? Norman.

Thanks Norman, I thought as much. I can take a transfer motor/gearbox from a 'donor JB that I have. Will try this. Thanks Rob

Hi Rob, Suggestion-- if the gear is good in the "donor", find someone with a "3D printer" and make a new one out of "Nylon"-- Install the new one in your phono, and save that donor -- Ron Rich

Hi Ron/Norman Thanks for the suggestion, however opening up the gear box I found that one of the inter connecting gear shafts had sheared off. I remember having the dome lid up with the JB operating and the gripper arm jammed and so then I must have sheared the gear shaft. I am sure I will be able to source a new gear shaft or have one made ? I have taken the working transfer assembly and motor from my donor JB and installed it BUT I need to be ultra careful setting up again so I do not shear another gear shaft !! With the gripper assembly positioned over the record magazine (REST position) and as per the Service Manual page RCS-22 the transfer assembly crank is in a straight line with the connecting link. In this position the the tone arm cam roller should be in contact with the LEFT hand side of the cam switches pivot plate vertical pin. However this is not the case and the tone arm cam roller is at the 9 o'clock position. Do I now loosen the tone arm crank and adjust it until the roller just touches the cam switches pivot plate vertical pin and lock it in this position? So when the gripper assembly is in the PLAYING position the tone arm crank roller should then be on the RIGHT hand of the cam switches pivot plate pin ? With these setting done can I now switch on the JB ? I cannot afford to damage the gear box assembly. Can you please advise. Thanks ROB 1948 (Johannesburg SA)

Hi Rob, This is just conjecture on my part as I have had just a little experience with Conties. I'm wondering-- can you manually turn that cam to meet those specs., if the motor is not connected ? If so, that's what I think I'd try-- Hopefully, Norman has a better answer-- Ron Rich

Hi Rob, This is a terrible state of affairs, making me read the manual! First of all, what is shown on page RCS-22 is the transfer motor and cam in the playing position not the rest position. The arrangement shown on page RCS-23 is the rest position. Does that clarify things for you? Or have I misunderstood?
Norman

Hi Norman, You were "made" to read the manual ?? Ain't that hard ? In my case, I gotta climb up a latter, reach above my head with my one half-good arm and get them down without dropping the binder full of them ! Phew-- I can't---don't do that ( and a lot of other things !), no more --- Ron Rich

Hi Guys, Sorry about that yes the 'REST' position is shown on page 23. In this position I seem to agree with Ron and that I must loosen the tone arm crank arm and move the roller currently in the 9.00 o'clock to approximately 7.00 o'clock to touch the can switches pivot plat vertical pin as shown on page RC23 ?

Hi Rob, Are you sure that you really have the transfer mechanism fully at rest with the gripper jaws fully open? With the transfer motor disconnected, the gripper jaws will relax a bit, there's a spring in there if my memory is correct (which the motor drives against to fully open the jaws) - time to get the manual out again! I would recommend that you double check this first before messing with the cam, which ought not to have moved. Norman.

Hi Norman, You are right the record gripper jaws are not fully open they are actually clamping a record. I need to push against that spring for the gripper jaws to release the record. And yes I agree the tone arm cam had no reason to move. It did concern me that moving the cam was not the right thing to do ! I must see if there is any more info in the manual. Thanks Rob (PS How is the 'Granite' city ? I had a cousin living there some time back but has since moved to Glasgow).

Hi Rob, I doubt you will find much more in the manual. What you could do is move the transfer motor to the rest position geometry as shown in the manual - you could actually do this by plugging it in and switching on briefly; the motor would drive. You could then fit the transfer motor and take a view on whether it all looked OK as compared to the manual. You should make sure the gripper assy is free and nicely lubricated while the motor is out.
The granite city is as OK as can be expected in the mess that the UK currently finds itself!
Norman.
